How much does it cost to bail someone out of jail?
By law, not less than 10% and no more than 15% of the total bond(s). It can also be called "premium" Sometimes, for more than usual risky bonds, collateral might be needed as well.
What is collateral?
Collateral is anything collected on top of the premium that will be returned to its owner once the defendant appears to all required court dates.
As a Co-Signer, am I only responsible for the defendant to show up to their next court date?
As the Co-Signer, you are responsible for the appearance of the defendant for all court dates until there is a final disposition in the case.
As the Co-Signer, do I have to show up to the defendant's court dates?
No. However, it is encouraged if the defendant shows signs of not wanting to show up for court.
As a Co-Signer, do I get my money back when the defendant's case is over?
No. The premium charged is the fee for the bail bondsman giving the court the full amount of the bond.
What is a bail bond?
A bail bond allows a defendant to be released with conditions and court dates. If released, the defendant promises to show up to court. This gives the defendant the freedom to continue life and to also prepare for their day in court.
What if a defendant does not show to court?
In most cases, the full amount of the bond is due from the Co-Signer. The defendant, (known as a fugitive) will also receive additional charges and additional jail time. If the defendant fails to appear on a felony charge, they will be charged with another felony failure to appear. If it is a misdemeanor, the defendant will be charged with a misdemeanor failure to appear.
Who can revoke a bond?
Only a judge or your bail bondsman can revoke a bond. In some cases, the Co-Signer can ask to revoke the bond.
Do I have to show up for court?
YES! You promised to show up for court. You signed legal documents promising to show up for court. Your Co-Signer signed legal documents promising to have you show up for court.
What if I accidently missed my court date?
We understand life happens. If you missed your court date, call us immediately. We will arrange to meet you at the jail and bond you back out if possible. Communication with your bail bondsman is extremely important.
What is a bond hearing?
A bond hearing is a hearing conducted by a judge or magistrate. They will ask the defendant a series of question to determine flight risk and set an appropriate bail amount.
